Summary of Comments on Pasifika Community Priority Projects Support

The feedback from the Nelson City Council's request for comments on the Long Term Plan, specifically regarding the Pasifika Community priority projects support, has been overwhelmingly positive. Residents have expressed strong support for the initiatives aimed at enhancing engagement and support for the Pasifika community within Nelson. Below are the key themes and recommendations extracted from the submissions:

Key Themes:

  1. Support for the Initiative: All comments reflect a positive view towards the council's efforts to support the Pasifika community. There is a general consensus that these initiatives are crucial and well-received by the community.

  2. Strategic and Authentic Utilization of Funds: There is a call for ensuring that the financial support provided is used in a strategic and authentic manner. The importance of aligning the support with the long-term goals of both the Pasifika community and the Nelson City Council is emphasized.

  3. Increased Visibility and Engagement: One submission highlighted the low presence of the Pasifika community in downtown Nelson, despite a significant population in the region. There is a desire for the city to become more welcoming and attractive to all cultures, particularly the Pasifika.

  4. Ongoing Support and Collaboration: There is advocacy for continued and possibly increased support for organizations that work with the Pasifika and other ethnic communities. Collaboration with groups like Cultural Conversations, Multicultural Nelson Tasman, and Shared Communities is recommended.

  5. Consideration of Diverse Pacific Ethnicities: It is recommended that the council considers the diversity within the Pacific ethnic communities when planning and implementing projects. This includes tailoring engagements to meet the specific needs and characteristics of different groups within the Pasifika community.

Recommendations:

  • Ensure Strategic Use of Resources: The council should ensure that the funds allocated for Pasifika community projects are used strategically to generate tangible outcomes that align with both the community's aspirations and the council’s long-term objectives.

  • Enhance Visibility and Cultural Inclusivity: Initiatives should be developed to increase the visibility of the Pasifika community in central Nelson, making the area more inclusive and representative of its diverse population.

  • Maintain and Increase Support: Continued financial and logistical support for organizations working with the Pasifika and broader ethnic communities should be considered. This could involve regular funding and support for community events and projects.

  • Tailored Community Engagement: Engagements should be carefully planned to address the specific needs of different Pacific ethnic groups within the community, ensuring inclusivity and effectiveness.

  • Documentation and Feedback: It is advisable to maintain detailed documentation of how funds are spent and to regularly seek feedback from the Pasifika community to gauge the impact of the projects and make necessary adjustments.

These insights should assist the council in making informed decisions regarding the support and integration of the Pasifika community in Nelson’s urban and cultural development.

It is great to see specific help for our longstanding Pacific community. It is important the Pacific Community priority projects support is utilised in a strategic and authentic way. It is important to consider the return of investment and what outcomes can be achieved by this financial support that see a stronger connection between the aspirations of the Nelson Pacific community and the vision and priorities set out by the Nelson City council in the long-term plan. 12.10
I'm happy to see the Pasifika engagement, and I look forwards to engaging more with them around the city. Having come from a Pasifika neighbourhood, I find it sadly apparent that they are barely present in downtown Nelson even though quite a lot of Tongans and Samoans in particular live around the region. It will be good when our inner city is welcoming and attractive to all cultures. 56.12
Re: Pasifika Community priority projects support – To engage with the Pasifika Community on priority projects, 2024/25, $20,000 total. ACN commend council on work carried out in these areas and advocate for more/on-going support for organisations working with these and other ethnic communities, i.e: Cultural Conversations, Multicultural Nelson Tasman, Shared Communities etc… 829.4
NPHS Te Waipounamu strongly supports increased engagement with the Pasifika Community as this is both a priority population for the NPHS19 and meets councils' responsibilities under the four wellbeing's. It is important to consider the range of Pacific ethnic-specific communities in Whakatū Nelson, which is highlighted in the table, when engaging. Please refer to attached document, p.18, to view table. 887.31
