Summary of Resident Feedback on Rocks Road Marine Restoration
The Nelson City Council has received several written submissions from residents concerning the proposed Rocks Road Marine Restoration project. The feedback highlights a mix of support for the initiative and suggestions for improvement, with no opposing viewpoints presented. Below is a summary of the key themes and recommendations from the submissions:
- Accessibility Improvement:
-
One resident highlighted the need to improve accessibility to the sea from the sea wall along Rocks Road. This area is noted as becoming increasingly popular for swimming and recreational activities. The current limited access points are a significant barrier that needs addressing to enhance usability and enjoyment of the area.
-
Support for Educational and Environmental Initiatives:
-
The submission from NPHS Te Waipounamu expresses strong support for the educational campaign aimed at habitat restoration of the rock pools along Rocks Road, set to commence in 2024/25. They appreciate the focus on reversing the decline of rock pool species and maintaining a healthy ecosystem to support marine life.
-
Local Engagement and Involvement in Environmental Programs:
- The Nelson Yacht Club has shown interest in engaging with the Rocks Road Marine Restoration project. They are currently adapting the RāNā programme's Moanamana module, which focuses on environmental sustainability and marine protection, to local conditions after a pilot in Wellington. The club expressed a desire to be involved in the restoration project but noted a lack of reference to the project in other documentation, suggesting a need for better communication and inclusion in project planning.
Recommendations for Council Consideration:
- Enhance Accessibility: Consider plans to increase the number of access points along the sea wall at Rocks Road to facilitate easier and safer access to the sea, thereby promoting recreational use.
- Promote and Support Educational Initiatives: Continue to support and promote educational campaigns like those proposed by NPHS Te Waipounamu, focusing on the ecological health and sustainability of marine environments.
- Engage Local Organizations: Actively engage with local organizations such as the Nelson Yacht Club, which are willing to contribute to the restoration efforts and can offer valuable insights and resources. Ensure that project documentation is comprehensive and accessible to all stakeholders to foster effective collaboration.
These recommendations aim to address the feedback provided by the residents and enhance the effectiveness and community support for the Rocks Road Marine Restoration project.

| Rock’s Road Marine Restoration Nelson Yacht Club is engaging with the Nelson Kahui Ako to develop and localise Yachting New Zealand’s RŪNĀ programme - a Sport NZ “In Our Backyard” initiative. The third module of RŪNĀ is Moanamana, which incorporates environmental sustainability, citizen science and projects to learn about, protect or enhance our marine environment. We are in the process of localising the Moanamana module after the test site at Worser Bay in Wellington. We would welcome engagement on the Rock’s Road Marine Restoration project, and would love to get involved if we can! However, we couldn’t find reference to it in any other documentation. | 1465.6 |
