Summary of Resident Feedback on Tahunanui Beach Facilities

The Nelson City Council has received several written submissions from residents concerning the proposed changes to the facilities at Tahunanui Beach, specifically regarding the construction and maintenance of facilities for local clubs. The comments reflect a mix of support and concerns that can be categorized into three main themes:

  1. Support for New Surf Life Saving Building:
  2. A resident expressed strong support for the council's proposal to construct a new building for the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club, emphasizing the necessity of such a facility. This sentiment was echoed by another comment which supported the idea of a new, fit-for-purpose building for the surf life saving club, alongside upgrading existing changing rooms to meet the standards required for sport and recreation users at Tahunanui sports fields.

  3. Consideration for Existing Facilities:

  4. There is a concern regarding the maintenance and seismic upgrading of existing facilities, such as those used by the Nelson Yacht Club. One comment highlighted the importance of extending the life of these existing facilities as a more environmentally sustainable option compared to building new structures.

  5. Proposal for a Community Hub:

  6. One submission proposed the idea of integrating the new facilities into a broader community sport and recreation hub as part of the Tahunanui Reserve Management Plan. This approach is suggested to maximize the benefits for organizations that support or deliver physical activity opportunities, fostering a more inclusive and functional community space.

Recommendations

Based on the feedback, the following recommendations are proposed for council consideration:

  • Balanced Approach to New and Existing Facilities: While the construction of a new facility for the surf life saving club is widely supported, attention should also be given to the maintenance and upgrading of existing facilities. This approach ensures that all community assets are preserved and enhanced, aligning with environmental sustainability goals.

  • Community Hub Development: Explore the feasibility of developing a community sport and recreation hub as part of the Tahunanui Reserve Management Plan. This could serve as a central point for various activities, enhancing the utility and appeal of the reserve.

  • Engage with All Stakeholders: Continue to engage with all relevant stakeholders, including clubs that currently use the facilities and the broader community, to ensure that the development meets the diverse needs and expectations of Tahunanui Beach users.

These recommendations aim to address the concerns and suggestions raised by the residents, ensuring that the development of Tahunanui Beach facilities is comprehensive and beneficial to the entire community.

Comment Point ID
Comment: New surf life saving building. Well i never, i was involved in a similar situation some 20years ago we  were gifted the reclaimed land. and the clubs concerned had to fined there own funds to build them No hand outs from the council. 346.3
Comment: The construction of a new facility for the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club is definitely needed, and I fully support the Council's proposal. However, there are other clubs like Nelson Yacht Club with existing facilities that require maintenance and seismic upgrading, which should also be considered and supported by Council. Extending the life of existing facilities is much more in line with reducing our impact on the environment than building new ones. 930.8
Comment: We fully support Council’s proposed option to provide a new fit for purpose surf life saving building and proposed approach to upgrade the existing changing rooms to a standard required for sport and recreation users at Tāhunanui sports fields. We believe that in addition to developing fit for purpose facilities, this would allow the opportunity to consider a community sport and recreation hub as part of the Tāhunanui Reserve Management Plan and thus recognise all the benefits for an organisation who support or deliver physical activity opportunities to be based and involved at the facility. 1027.10
